Johnny Depp surprised young patients during a visit to a children’s hospital in Spain while attending a major film festival.
The actor was in the country for the San Sebastian Film Festival when he made an unannounced stop at Osakidetza Donostia University Hospital.
Depp arrived dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, his character from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
The visit brought an unexpected moment of joy for children receiving treatment at the hospital. Depp spent time in the pediatric and oncology wards, greeting patients and their families.

Staff said the appearance was completely impromptu and quickly lifted spirits throughout the hospital. Children and parents reacted with visible excitement as the actor interacted with them in character.
A hospital spokesperson described the visit as “exciting, endearing and unforgettable.” They said both families and staff welcomed Depp with enthusiasm and affection.
The spokesperson explained that moments like this offer meaningful relief during difficult hospital stays. They said the visit allowed children to forget about their illness, even briefly.
“In a situation of illness, anyone, but especially children, greatly appreciates a distraction of this magnitude,” the spokesperson said.
They described the visit as “a breath of fresh air” and “a magical moment.” The hospital said the children were transported into the fictional world of pirates during the interaction.

The spokesperson added that the hospital community was deeply thankful.
They said the entire team, patients, and families were “enormously grateful” for the visit.
“It has been a pleasure and an honor to have Jack Sparrow with us, a great pirate,” they said.
Experts say celebrity visits support emotional health
Medical experts say visits from well-known figures can have lasting emotional benefits for hospitalized children.
Dr Harpreet Pall, chair of pediatrics at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital in New Jersey, said celebrity visits can have a “meaningful impact.”

She explained that such moments often improve morale and emotional wellbeing.
“Some of the psychological benefits include improved self-esteem and confidence,” Pall said.
She added that these visits can distract children from illness and reduce stress.
Pall said the excitement created by a celebrity appearance can ease anxiety during hospital treatment.
She also noted that positive experiences can improve engagement with medical care. Pall said children who feel more optimistic may better adhere to treatment plans.
