A former state corrections officer was taken into custody late Wednesday night after being caught in a restricted area of the Franklin County Correctional Center with an inmate.

The officer, 29-year-old Maya Vance, had reportedly clocked out of her shift at 11:00 PM but remained on the premises. She was discovered by a supervisor during a perimeter sweep of the facility’s laundry department.

Under Ohio law, any sexual relations between a prison employee and an inmate is classified as a felony, as the power imbalance precludes the possibility of legal consent.

“This is a clear violation of our code of ethics and a breach of facility security,” a department spokesperson said in a brief statement. Vance was terminated immediately and faces charges of sexual battery and official misconduct. She is currently being held at a neighboring county jail pending her arraignment.
