A Chinese factory worker named Xie Wei lost his right hand in a serious industrial accident involving heavy machinery. The damage to his arm was so severe that doctors could not immediately reattach the hand.
To prevent the hand from dying, surgeons temporarily grafted it onto his ankle, connecting it to blood vessels in his leg. This allowed the hand to receive blood flow and stay alive while his arm recovered enough for reconstruction.
After about a month, doctors successfully moved the hand back to its original position and reattached it to the arm. According to the medical team, the surgery was successful, and Xie Wei was able to regain movement and function in his hand.
This rare procedure, known as temporary ectopic implantation, is a real but uncommon medical technique used in extreme injury cases when immediate reattachment is not possible.
